Environment

UN Sustainable Development Goal 15; Protect, Restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

The entire ecosystem i.e. the interaction of all living species, climate, weather and natural resources that affect human survival and economic activity makes up our environment. We face various environmental issues and need to work as effective earth saviors.

As earth saviors, we have and can undertake multiple tasks. We need to address air pollution as this is killing us. The first thought that strikes the mind is to plant as many trees as possible because trees not only absorb carbon dioxide but also absorb pollutant gases such as nitrogen oxides, ozone, ammonia, sulfur dioxide. Trees are our main natural survival tool, as one tree alone produces enough oxygen for four people. Trees work as Natural air conditioners and are cooling cities by up to 3C. Huge Plantation Drives are carried out regularly across schools, colleges & various RWAs every year by our Foundation to help increase the Green cover of Delhi-NCR.

Urban parks are also called the “Lungs of the city”. Under a JSL CSR initiative we are restoring, maintaining and developing an urban park in Hisar, Haryana. Along with traditional methods like plantation, water harvesting, composting, landscaping, few new innovative ideas are being used at the Park. Street Art and Art installations are some highlights along with the introduction of green walls and topiary animals and an open Gym. Visitors are happy to see the efforts and this is evident in the tripling of the footfall since we started.

Taking Another challenge faced by our country is the burning of stubble or parali as it is popularly known. Our project involves utilizing this resource by procuring it from the farmers at a good price. We then convert this stubble along with a few natural ingredients like cow dung into FULLY LOADED PLANTERS. This combination provides a super nutrient lining packed with high levels of minerals – including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, ready to receive a sapling which will grow into a healthy plant. This potted plant/sapling needs minimalistic care in terms of watering and additional composts and urea.

Our role as earth saviours becomes even bigger when we talk of taking forward the goal of a “Zero waste India”. We felt the need to address the issue of the irresponsible methods of discarding tyres “We came across a scrap dealer burning discarded tyres, a couple of years ago. When we questioned him about it, we found out that there was no other solution to dispose off discarded tyres. As conscious citizens we were interested to find a solution for this. We decided to reuse old tyres to make furniture and other useful products like planters. Furniture made from recycled tyres are eye-catching, cost-effective and eco-friendly.

Things like planters which are highly appreciated at the O.P. Jindal Memorial Park, Hisar. Dustbins and storage bins, tables are rather easy to make. The furniture made of recycled tyres is resistant to all kinds of weather changes, are rust proof, termite proof and can be used both outdoors and indoors. For most of the products made with recycled tyres longevity is guaranteed. Except for repainting the external portion at regular intervals, other costs to maintain it are few.

We have taken up multiple projects and we have collaboration with various organisations to provide waste management solutions. In Partnership we are continuously trying to achieve Zero tolerance to any kind of waste - food, dry flowers, leaves and construction debris. The process includes extensive public awareness along with treatment plants for converting the waste to useful by-products.
