Slum Sensitisation & Sanitation

Rapid urbanisation has forced many vulnerable families into overcrowded informal settlements where access to safe sanitation remains critically inadequate. In Ghata Village, Gurugram, poor sanitation infrastructure exposed slum residents to unhygienic conditions, health risks, and a lack of dignity in daily life. To address this urgent challenge, Prabhaav Foundation, with support from Affle (India) Limited, implemented a focused WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) intervention to improve sanitation access and promote healthier hygiene practices within the community.

A key component of the initiative was the installation of portable toilet units within the settlement, providing residents with safe, accessible, and hygienic sanitation facilities. These units were equipped with water tanks and septic tanks to ensure functionality, cleanliness, and sustained usability. Alongside infrastructure support, the project also prioritised community sensitisation, with regular awareness sessions conducted to encourage proper usage, maintenance, and the adoption of essential hygiene practices.

The initiative aligns strongly with SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation by expanding access to equitable sanitation and helping reduce open defecation. It also advances SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 1: No Poverty by improving living conditions in underserved urban communities. Importantly, it supports SDG 5: Gender Equality by enhancing privacy, safety, and dignity for women and girls, while reflecting SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaborative action for community well-being.
